What is EPS Beads

Definition

Small pre-expansion polystyrene particles used to create lightweight, rigid foam products. Composed of polystyrene resin infused with a blowing agent (typically pentane).

Production Process

  1. Polymerization: Styrene monomers → polystyrene resin
  2. Bead Formation: Processed into spherical beads (∼0.2–3 mm)
  3. Impregnation: Addition of blowing agent
  4. Expansion: Heat with steam → 50× size increase
  5. Molding: Fuse beads using steam molds

Key Properties

Lightweight 98% air content
Insulating Excellent thermal/acoustic performance
Cushioning Shock-absorbent structure
Water-Resistant Closed-cell design

Applications

  • 📦 Packaging (electronics, fragile goods)
