Definition
Small pre-expansion polystyrene particles used to create lightweight, rigid foam products. Composed of polystyrene resin infused with a blowing agent (typically pentane).
Production Process
- Polymerization: Styrene monomers → polystyrene resin
- Bead Formation: Processed into spherical beads (∼0.2–3 mm)
- Impregnation: Addition of blowing agent
- Expansion: Heat with steam → 50× size increase
- Molding: Fuse beads using steam molds
